Suzanne Polkosnik, Q.C. Barrister & Solicitor
Suzanne Polkosnik, Q.C. joins Swainson Miki Peskett LLP as the leader of our Employment and Labour group. Suzanne grew up in Edmonton, completed her undergraduate degree at the McGill University and received her law degree (LL.B.) from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. She was called to bar in Alberta in 1993. Suzanne started her career as a criminal defense lawyer and started practicing in the area of employment and labour law shortly thereafter.
Suzanne has had a varied career which includes significant experience in private practice, acting as in-house counsel, leading various organizations, and providing business consultancy services. Through that diverse experience, she has gained a keen appreciation for the value of practical, timely and experienced advice in assisting employers in the management of what is often their most valuable asset and single largest expense – their workforce. Suzanne’s unique skill set allows her to identify solutions and approaches that bring an extensive understanding of the law and business acumen together in both unionized and non-unionized work settings. Suzanne has also worked closely with the boards of many organizations, public, private and not-for-profit alike, to assist them in the development and refinement of their governance practices and policies. This includes drafting and amending by-laws and board policies, assisting with Board education and evaluation, leading strategic and succession planning efforts, providing advice on matters related to fiduciary duty and director liability, supporting director recruitment and removal processes, and working with leadership to manage organizational redesign and change.
Suzanne was the Associate General Counsel for Epcor Utilities Inc., counsel and negotiator for the Provincial Health Authorities of Alberta, and the CEO of Legal Aid Alberta, the Alberta School Boards Association and the Edmonton Human Society.
Suzanne is dedicated to community service and has served on the Edmonton Police Commission, where she chaired the professional standards committee, and the Board of the Edmonton Screen Industries Office. Suzanne is currently serving a second term as a legal member and panel chair on the Alberta Review Board. Suzanne is an animal lover, swimmer, skier, cyclist, and want-to-be golfer.
